BLAND, Va. - With a little help from the federal
government, a medical clinic that provides care to residents
regardless of their ability to pay is expanding.
A federal grant in the amount of $1.2 million will allow for the
expansion of the Bland County Medical Clinic, and for the hiring of
additional clinic staff members to serve an expanding business
population, U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., said.
The grant funding will be awarded to the clinic during a two-year
period, and will allow for the construction of an additional 2,704
square-feet to the existing building and six new examination rooms.
New exam room tables and cabinetry will also be purchased, along with
new waiting room furniture and seven new computers.
The federal grant also will allow for the hiring of a new nurse
practitioner, two registered nurses, one dietician/outreach worker and
three additional support staff members.
"I would like to extend a big 'thank you'
to you Congressman Boucher for helping us to obtain this grant," Susan
Greever, executive director of the medical clinic, said. "You have
been a big help. I also would like to thank the board because of their
efforts and help with the fund-raisers."
In addition to the federal dollars, a private donor has agreed to
provide $500,000 for the construction project provided the clinic
raises $100,000 in matching funds. The clinic has already raised
$35,000, and is hoping to have the remaining $65,000 in pocket later
this fall.
